Do Only Women Get Cellulite?

Cellulite can be defined as a condition whereby fat accumulates on the skin resulting to a bumpy and dimpled appearance. Cellulite mainly forms around the hips, thighs and buttocks. Cellulite occurs in four different grades. Grade one cellulite is not visible even when the skin is pinched and may therefore be observed through microscopic examinations. Grade two cellulite is not visible when standing or lying down but an orange peel structure can be seen if the skin is pinched. Grade three cellulite is visible when one is standing but disappears when lying down. Grade four cellulite is visible when one is standing or lying down.

Cellulite affects both men and women. However, it is more common in females because they are more likely to have particular types of fat and connective tissue. The hormone estrogen makes women to have more fats than men. The structure of the skin and where the fat is stored contributes to cellulite formation. For instance, the skin and the underlying connective tissues in women are thinner while the fat layer is thicker. On the other hand the underlying connective tissue of men is thicker while the fat layer is thinner. Additionally fat in men usually hold around the abdomen while in women it hold around buttocks and thighs.

Cellulite become visible as muscles push out the fat alongside the connective tissues and skin. As one moves, the muscles in lower body push more against the fat layer. This cause more tension pushing fat out to the surface. This will therefore mainly affect women since their fats are stored around the hips, thighs and buttocks. On the contrary, stomach, where men’s’ fat are store is not a big muscle that flex all the time.

There are several theories that explain the cause of cellulite. One of the theories is hormonal factors. Secondly are hereditary factors resulting to low metabolism, circulatory inefficiency and distribution of fat underneath the skin. Thirdly, cellulite may be caused by lifestyle factors such as continued smoking, standing or sitting in one position for long and failure to do exercises. Finally some kind of clothing such as tight underwear may limit blood flow leading to formation of cellulite. According to experts, cellulite may be reduced mainly by eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables and fiber. Exercises that include weight training, drinking plenty of fluids and stopping smoking can also reduce cellulite.
